Swiss Federal Railways Completes First Version of Blockchain Credential Management System

National Swiss railway operator has created a system confirming employees’ presence at construction sites

The national railway company of Switzerland has reportedly completed a proof of concept of a “self-sovereign” blockchain-based identity management system.

Swiss Federal Railways’ product was developed by Linum Labs, a company located in Switzerland and focused on creating decentralized systems, deploying Ethereum-based identity management protocol uPort, that was partly developed by blockchain incubator ConsenSys.

According to the release shared with Cointelegraph, trials of the blockchain-based ID management system were deployed from May till November 2018. The system is supposed to be used by employees at the railway company’s construction sites. The aim of the project is increasing of the efficiency of paper-based processes in an “agile working environment with a digital, audit-proof solution based on blockchain.”

During testing of the mentioned system, employees created their digital identities in the uPort application on their smartphones, which subsequently has been used to sign in and out of construction sites where workers were engaged. The system confirmed workers’ presence at construction sites, and certified their training.
