Robot CIMON made its debute at International Space Station

Astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) met robot CIMON with artificial intelligence (AI)

Robot CIMON was designed by Airbus. The robos AI cleverness was provided by IBM Watson. Thanks to it, CIMON can understand questions and can give replies. CIMON cannot process data independently - it requires communication with a computer on the Earth.

On Earth, robot’s weight was just five kilograms. The globe-like robot has a large screen on the front, where it can display cartoonish faces and information needed for various tasks.

Astronaut Alexander Gerst from Germany, who is the current ISS commander, was first to speak with CIMON. A. Gerst said “Wake up, CIMON” and the robot answered “What can I do for you?”

The first assignment for the robot was to carry out a student-designed experiment with crystals. CIMON recognised A. Gerst’s face, positioned itself autonomously, and gave instructions on how to perform the experiment.

Till Eisenberg, who is CIMON Project Manager at Airbus, reported that he consider CIMON as “a huge step forward for human space flight, achieved by working in cooperation with our partners”. He added that the robot’s creators “have laid the foundations for social assistance systems that are designed to be used under extreme conditions.”
