Hacker attacks on Bithumb

Hacker attacks on Bithumb

Hackers managed to hack the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange system. Is it possible?

On 20 June Bithumb has been cracked for the third time in 12 months. Hackers managed to steal 30 million dollars from cryptocurrency exchange system and they could steal more if only the Bithumb team wouldn't transfer money from hot wallet to cold or offline wallet. Only the fast reaction of this team helped to save funds of Bithumb. If they hadn't acted that way all the money would have been lost forever. According to local investors, Bithumb has been aware of the upcoming attacks since June 16 and there were attempts to fight with these attacks but the team couldn't handle them. Finally, the decision to transfer funds to another wallet was made and hereby they saved the most part of the funds.

It's curious that for many months investors were told by industry experts that they needed to use top cryptocurrency exchange systems to avoid loss of funds. Nowadays South Korean local security experts report that every cryptocurrency exchange system can be hacked if hackers have sufficient resources. This accident happened with Bithumb on June 20 was the reason for doubts of local investors not to rely on these systems. Now there is no trust from the side of the investors as they are afraid of losing their money.

Even though some cryptocurrency exchange systems were hacked there are other organisations that are still unhackable. For instance, let's look at such giants as Coinbase (US), Binance (Malta), Gemini (US), UPBit (South Korea), Korbit (South Korea), Huobi (Hong Kong, Kraken (US), Bittrex (US), and BitMEX (Republic of Seychelles). Which feature do they have in common? The thing is that they care about their client funds' security. All these organisations distribute a substantial part of their resources and capital to securing client funds and it's their primary task.

It has to be mentioned that such companies as Coinbase and Bitflyer started to invite specialists in dealing with the most difficult sector of finance, including security. Recently Bithumb also has been trying to find such specialists and in the result, their system was cracked.
