This new publishing platform has got encouragement from giants of the new industry
On January 14, 2019, an official press release revealed that ConsenSys – blockchain tech company – has joint to the creation of a new revenue-generating news platform Newspack created by WordPress’ parent company Automattic.
According to the announcement, ConsenSys has committed 350,000 USD in the Newspack, which is an open-source publishing platform for media companies. Previously, the project has got investments from such giants of the news industry as Google News, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and The Lenfest Institute for Journalism. All in all, Automattic and its partners News Revenue Hub and Spirited Media has received 2.4 million USD for the first-year funding of the project.
Newspark will be created on WordPress's cloud-based platform. It will include cutting-edge practices in digital publishing, and it aims to provide small digital publisher with a cost-effective system that will help to create economically sustainable models for journalism, expecially at the local level.
Kinsey Wilson, President of WordPress.com, said: “Local news organizations are struggling to find sustainable models for journalism – a crisis that has very real implications for democracy.” “We're joining with industry leaders to bring technology, publishing and business expertise together in a single platform that can be shared by news organizations across the globe,” he added.
The partners have plans to launch a proof of concept involving about a dozen news sites by mid-2019 and then broaden out to support up to 60 news sites by early 2020.
