Blockstream Launches Fifth Satellite Streaming Bitcoin Blockchain From Earth Orbit

The initiative is aimed at internet-free Bitcoin transactions in every region of the Earth

Blockchain development company Blockstream has started broadcasting the Bitcoin blockchain from the fifth satellite positioned in the Earth Orbit. This will enable to reach almost every region of all mainlands, according to the Forbes report from December 17, 2018.

The addition of a fifth satellite will bring the wider coverage and will purportedly guarantee internet-free Bitcoin transactions and information sharing to users in the Asia Pacific region. Previously, Blockstream broadcasted from only four satellites that covered North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. With the fifth satellite announced, Blockstream will cover all major Earth landmasses except from Greenland and Antarctica. At the moment, the satellite service still in beta.

Furthermore, Blockstream has launched a new application programming interface (API) which lets users send encrypted messages to each other from many remotest regions on the Earth. Users will pay for those messages in bitcoin using the Lightning Network. Samson Mow –Blockstream CSO – noted that “Bitcoin has always been about uncensorable money, and now we have uncensorable communications as well.”

The aim of the ambitious Bitcoin space initiative is to free digital currencies usage from dependency on the Internet availability and achieve maximum security of the Bitcoin network.
